Integrating intellect and sensibility
Students can major in art and design studies, fine arts, composition and construction, and design at the School of Art and Design. The educational features all of these majors have in common are a well-rounded education—stemming from the fact that the school belongs to a university—and the development of extensive expertise comparable to that in a specialized cluster college. For this reason, our aim is, first, to dispel facile preconceived notions in order to integrate intellect and sensibility.
A curriculum that integrates the basics with specialization
First and second year students can freely and cross-sectionally choose from a variety of subjects. Students may also learn the fundamentals of art and design without being bound to a specialization. From their third year, students take more advanced and specialized subjects in each field. Beginning with their third year, students focus on their majors and take more advanced and specialized subjects. Their study topics, which will be related to their graduation research in the fourth year, are refined and given more direction.
Education that respects student individuality
The individuality of each student must be treated with the utmost respect in art and design education. For this reason, specialized education for the third and fourth year students consists of small classes, if possible, as well as guidance that cultivates individuality through dialogue.
Linking lessons with the workplace
We offer university education in touch with society by sending students out to gain experience in businesses, administrations, and museums, and by inviting speakers from extramural workplaces. In addition, we have developed educational programs that involve cooperation with non-arts students, teachers, or citizens, thus enabling students to be trained with a high degree of collaboration and a broad perspective, and helping them to comprehend the age in which they live.
The simultaneous pursuit of creative expressive power and the capacity for logical thought
Since this school was established, students have been required to complete both a graduation production and a thesis before graduating. While engaging in craftsmanship, students will also develop reliable writing skills, mastering the ability to think logically and objectively, and to express themselves competently.
