Educational Objectives of the School of Art and Design

Taking advantage of the school’s uniqueness as a place for art and design education within a university, the School of Art and Design aims to foster specialists who have both abundant creative energy and a broad vision along with solid fundamental academic skills, and who are equipped with flexible inventiveness and rich expressive power.

Educational Content / Method

Integrating intellect and sensibility

Students can major in art and design studies, fine arts, composition and construction, and design at the School of Art and Design. The educational features all of these majors have in common are a well-rounded education—stemming from the fact that the school belongs to a university—and the development of extensive expertise comparable to that in a specialized cluster college. For this reason, our aim is, first, to dispel facile preconceived notions in order to integrate intellect and sensibility.

A curriculum that integrates the basics with specialization

First and second year students can freely and cross-sectionally choose from a variety of subjects. Students may also learn the fundamentals of art and design without being bound to a specialization. From their third year, students take more advanced and specialized subjects in each field. Beginning with their third year, students focus on their majors and take more advanced and specialized subjects. Their study topics, which will be related to their graduation research in the fourth year, are refined and given more direction.

Education that respects student individuality

The individuality of each student must be treated with the utmost respect in art and design education. For this reason, specialized education for the third and fourth year students consists of small classes, if possible, as well as guidance that cultivates individuality through dialogue.

Linking lessons with the workplace

We offer university education in touch with society by sending students out to gain experience in businesses, administrations, and museums, and by inviting speakers from extramural workplaces. In addition, we have developed educational programs that involve cooperation with non-arts students, teachers, or citizens, thus enabling students to be trained with a high degree of collaboration and a broad perspective, and helping them to comprehend the age in which they live.

The simultaneous pursuit of creative expressive power and the capacity for logical thought

Since this school was established, students have been required to complete both a graduation production and a thesis before graduating. While engaging in craftsmanship, students will also develop reliable writing skills, mastering the ability to think logically and objectively, and to express themselves competently.

Achievement levels

Graduation research

Students’ achievements are summarized in their graduation research (graduation productionject + thesis), the culmination of four years’ study, which will be published and displayed at an off-campus public art gallery where it is open for review by the community. As well as forming a record for the student, the graduation research portfolio demonstrates the standards of the School of Art and Design of the University of Tsukuba as it is widely distributed throughout the community. Students who create outstanding works of art are honored with the Grand Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Graduate School of Art and Design or the Art and Design Prize of the Provost of the School of Art and Design, which are kept at the university.

Creative expressiveness in art and design

A creative and flexible mindset or vision in art and design can be properly expressed by using the expertise and skills gained in fine art and design.

Problem-solving skills in art

In taking the initiative to seek out the various problems facing art and design today, students are able to solve such problems through a flexible mindset and good judgment, based on the knowledge and skills obtained.

Capacity for logical thinking based on an extensive body of knowledge

Based on the broad perspective they gain through an interdisciplinary liberal arts education, specialized knowledge, and experience, students are able to think logically about various problems.

Communication skills rich with sensibility

With the ability to express their sensibilities and the capacity for sharing such sensibilities, students cooperate with one another and facilitate communication that enables them to develop rich and creative personal relationships.

Basic skills for independent and social creative endeavors

By gaining an understanding of the importance and role of art and design in society, students are able to continue their creative endeavors as independent art and design experts.

Assuring the quality of education

The School of Art and Design Faculty Development (FD) Committee continually improves the teaching methods through such measures as student course evaluation questionnaires.
By facilitating international student exchanges, artwork exchange exhibitions, and international workshops with partner universities (12 international universities at present), we are able to foster students who develop a global sense of awareness.
Students are encouraged to present their work and research both on campus and elsewhere, and to participate in a wide variety of public competitions. Thus, the students are able to recognize their own abilities, and the teaching staff have the opportunity to observe their training objectively.
Through the School of Art and Design Student Life Support Office, classroom committees, teachers in charge, graduate research supervisors, and the university-wide Student Plaza and health center, students’ opinions on such aspects as education are coordinated and improvements made to student life. In this way, we are able to support the students so they can lead a student life that is healthy and meaningful.

Career paths after graduation

Our graduates go on to fulfill their own goals in various fields. For example, some may continue with other graduate programs while others find employment with companies or pursue their careers as independent artists or designers. Some students also enter into college or graduate school programs to retrain themselves after being in the workforce. In a university that opens its doors and sends exchange students to its international partner universities, the School of Art and Design promotes continuous interaction with the international community and works toward revitalizing the creative scene.

Communication skills rich with sensibility

The ability to communicate one’s thoughts properly is needed for building productive personal relationships in society. Art creation is communication through sensibility. The School of Art and Design provides an education that enables the development of communication skills that are rich in sensibility.
