words，as is well understood，that ‘Age of Enlightenment’ marks a moment when new visions of architectural space took flight， produced through a conjunction of archeology and imagination.The spatial imagination of the eighteenth century revealed itself upon the horizon where‘future’as a new vision of the metropolis and ‘past’ as archeological resource intersect. Its projects bear an awareness not only of the road from ancient Greece and Rome to the Renaissance revival of classicism and so-called Neoclassicism of the latter half of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries， but also of the path of ‘Reason’ and its adventures as eventually met and interrogated by the space of the ‘Modern Age’ We define the latter in its broadest sense， with a starting point in the Age of Enlightenment and continuing onward into the Present. The variety of projects here assembled will serve to demonstrate the nature and problems of divers architectural styles， such as that termed Classicism. It will also encourage viewers to explore themes and perspectives，such as those of reason and geometry-in the center of the city, with its axes that pierce architectural objects as they do the fabric of the city itself-and the inevitable symbolism these afford.
