本研究は、退職者の生活におけるサードプレイスの新たな4つの役割を明らかにした。「サードプレイス」とは、家（第一の場所）や職場（第二の場所）に次ぐ、第三の場所を意味する。第一に、サードプレイスは「プレイス2.5」として機能し、退職者が地域社会との関わりを通じて目的を見出し、仕事と余暇の間を橋渡しする場となっている。第二に、サードプレイスは身体の健康を促進する重要な役割を果たしており、退職者が運動や健康促進の活動を求める傾向が見られる。第三に、ウォーキングはサードプレイスと関連する重要な活動であり、退職者が日常生活の中で移動力と関与を維持する手段となっている。最後に、デジタル化の進展によりバーチャルサードプレイスが登場したが、これには社会的交流の質を損なう可能性のある課題も含まれている。これらの役割は、サードプレイスの進化する役割を強調している。

This study reveals four new roles of third places in the lives of retirees. First, third places function as “place 2.5,” where retirees seek purpose through community engagement, bridging the gap between work and leisure. Second, third places play a crucial role in promoting physical health, as retirees often search for exercise and wellness activities. Third, walking emerges as an essential activity linked to third places, enabling retirees to maintain mobility and engagement into their daily routines. Finally, the rise of digitalization has led to the emergence of virtual third places, which also present challenges that may detract from the quality of social interactions. Collectively, these roles highlight the evolving roles of third places.
