Art Appreciation Skills

How do we perceive elements of an artwork, including its subject matter, expressiveness, form, and style? Presumably, people undertake actions such as observation, association, analysis, and interpretation with regard to individual elements. While appreciating an artwork, people are supposed to cultivate their own taste, try to understand the artwork deeply, find new meaning in it, and furthermore, develop a persuasive judgment based on certain grounds.

Based on the combination of elemnts of artworks that viewers pay attention to and reponse behaviours, we propose the concept of “appreciation skills” and define the skills one has become accustomed to using as comprising “appreciation repertoires.”  With the purpose of encouraging viewers to use various skills, we prepared a tool to encourage art appreciation with graphics to illustrate the elements of an artwork and the behaviors undertaken by viewers.
