Repetitive Performers: a practice-based study of photographers’ performing gestures in contemporary portrait photography in Japan from the 1970s to now

作品解説　Statement

このプロジェクトは、浅草寺にある着物店とのコラボレーションとして始まり、伝統衣装 を身にまとったお客様のポートレートを撮影する仕事だった。撮影が始まる前から、撮影 者的ジェスチャーがどのように全体の体験を形作っていくのかが私的関心を引いた。被写 体はその動作を反射するように動き、あたかも文化的な真実を演じているかのようだっ た。しかし、異なる撮影者とクライアントが同じポーズを繰り返すのを目の当たりにし て、ここでの写真撮影が単なる記録ではなく、文化的体験そのものを商品化するプロセス であることが明らかになった。この反復性、ポーズ的均一性、そして生産ラインのような 撮影セッションは、写真とアイデンティティ的両方が観光経済的一部として消費されてい るという深層的な商品化を示唆している。撮影という行為は、市場価値のある文化的象徴 を再生産する行為へと変貌していくかもしれない。

This project began as a collaboration with a kimono shop in Senso-ji Temple, where I was hired to take portraits of customers dressed in traditional attire. What started as a straightforward assignment soon became a deeper observation of the commercial practices of photographing that dominate this tourist site. What fascinated me was how the photographer’s gestures, even before the shutter was released, shaped the whole experience. The subjects mirrored these movements, enacting a pre-scripted performance of cultural authenticity. But as I watched the same poses being repeated by different photographers and clients, it became clear how photography here functions not just as a means of documentation but as a process of commodifying the cultural experience itself. The repetition, the uniformity of poses, and the production-line nature of these sessions suggest a deeper commodification – where image and identity are packaged, sold, and consumed as part of the tourist economy. The act of photographing is transformed from capturing a moment to reproducing a marketable cultural symbol.
