Exhibition of paintings made with cosmetics

T+review

For women, "makeup" is something that has a deep relationship with them and is inseparable from the process of creating themselves. I couldn't see what was being used to draw the works from behind the glass, but I was not wrong in feeling that there was something very feminine about them. Yes, the works on display were drawn with the exhibitor's own cosmetics.
Inside the gallery, there were three works made with a pale red screen. I was particularly fascinated by the work that was displayed across the entire front wall. There was no information on what was used to paint the painting, and when I first saw the painting, I thought it was made with a pastel-like material. However, when I looked at the painting thinking it was cosmetics, I was surprised at the richness of its characteristics. From moist to rough. What a variety of expressions the tools used to decorate a woman's face can have.
Facing a mirror that reflects her own face, she takes hold of cosmetics and transforms into someone no one knows. Makeup is the switch that signals the beginning of everyday life, and the reset that signals its end. As one gazes at the accumulated traces of everyday life through this piece of information called "cosmetics," the image of a woman gazing into the mirror seems to emerge beyond this piece of paper. A casual part of the exhibitor's everyday life has been cut out, and it is here, now. The cosmetics are connected to the woman's face, and they bring to the viewer a glimpse of "something that is uniquely her." It seems that one can see the reason why the exhibitor has characterized this exhibit as a "self-portrait." (Ota Natsuki)
