T+review
Anyone who steps into the gallery will surely be confused by what is displayed within the space. Photos of posing girls plastered across one wall have been edited to remove their faces. On the other wall, a video of people in cosplay is playing. In the center of the gallery are colorful fresh flowers. Clothes are hanging by the window panes. Mysterious videos, mysterious fresh flowers, mysterious photos... it's chaotic, and it's hard to know where to start or what to look at.
However, reading the concept statement posted on the wall, you can gradually understand what they, the anonymous group "Gina," wanted to do. "Gina" was involved in a certain event related to the title of this exhibition, but they were not satisfied with the process and results of its implementation. They said that this exhibition was their attempt to express the light and shadow of the glamorous event they felt at the time, the friction with other organizers, and their own ideals. The girls are the light side of the event. Their faces are obscured to symbolize the dark side of the event. The footage of Gina in cosplay is an assertion that "we didn't show up at all, but we had individuality and existed in the event."
Their exhibition was chaotic and incomplete. If they had organized the content more and narrowed down the focus to, for example, "pay attention to the light and shadow of the event" or "create the event that they had imagined," it would certainly be easier for the viewers to understand. However, this chaotic situation is probably a sign that Gina herself has not yet organized herself, and that each person has a different way of digesting things.
The objects and videos displayed in the gallery were apparently created by each Gina member in their own way. This is why the different nuances of each work coexisted, creating a chaotic atmosphere. The Miss Tsukuba Contest was not an exhibition by one group with a single direction. It was an exhibition with the direction of each member of the group. (Okano Emiko)
