Preface to the Sacred Teachings of Yanta by Chu Suiliang
136×69cm
This year's Bakushu Exhibition returned to its roots, copying classic works by a Tang dynasty calligrapher who is said to have studied under the master of calligraphy, Wang Xizhi.
The regular script work is a classic written by Chu Suiliang, one of the three great calligraphers of the early Tang Dynasty, and is attractive for its dynamic lines with a rich variety of brush pressure. I copied it while paying attention to the thickness and intonation, and was conscious of creating thin, yet tenacious, flowing lines.
Regarding the character shapes, I also tried to write while understanding the parts where the length of the lines is clearly defined, and the relative positions of the radicals and side characters.
Lin Sun Guoting Calligraphy

My descent. An incompetent and good person. No possession. Non-specialist. Yui Seirei Sosho. Variable for engineering. Saisei Amami. Every experience.
Sun Guoting's "Calligraphy" from the Tang Dynasty is said to have been faithfully studied by Wang Xizhi and is regarded as an authentic cursive script. Because there is movement with a variety of lines, I was conscious of using strong pressure in my brush strokes and varying the speed while making use of the opening and closing of the brush.
