About the University of Tsukuba's educational system

The University of Tsukuba's curriculum consists of ``basic subjects'' offered throughout the university, and ``specialized basic subjects'' and ``specialized subjects'' offered by each school.

  • Basic subjects
    • Subjects to improve your knowledge and broaden your horizons.
    • Common subjects: general subjects, physical education, foreign languages, information, and art.
    • Related subjects: Select and study teaching profession subjects, museum-related subjects, and subjects from other academic groups and departments.
  • Specialized basic subjects (subject number isYA(subjects starting with)
    • Subjects offered in common within the School of Arts.
  • Specialized subject (subject number isYB(subjects starting with)
    • Subjects are offered for each area.Courses are taken in stages for each specialized field.

Taking specialized introductory subjects

    • In the College of Arts and Sciences, the three specialized introductory subjects starting with the subject number YA are compulsory graduation requirements, so please be sure to complete them.

    • Two credits are required for courses whose number begins with E or F as related to graduation requirements.If there are any specialized introductory courses that you can take, please consider taking them.

Taking art career education (2nd year)

  • In order to help you consider your career path after graduation, we will invite guests to give lectures, as well as engage in collaborative learning to help you think about your own career design.

  • Classes are held every year, but in the second year we make sure that compulsory classes do not overlap in the same period of the week.Please be sure to take this course as it is compulsory.

Area research courses (2nd year, 3rd year)

  • In order to select and decide on a field in stages, students are required to select and take one credit from a group of subjects called "area research" starting in their second year. Please take the research area offered by the area you want to advance to in your second year.

  • In this course, you can learn about what kinds of courses you should take to gain strength in the field you want to advance in, as well as information about class presentations held in each field, exhibitions related to the field, etc. Masu.

  • A report is required for all research areas.We will evaluate your application based on the report, but we will not judge whether you can advance to that area based on its merits or demerits.

  • Area research is also available at the beginning of the third year. The area of ​​research you take at the beginning of your second year and the area of ​​research you take in your third year do not necessarily have to be the same. (The curriculum itself is designed with the assumption that students will continue to study the same area)

Taking special area seminars (3rd year, 4th year)

  • Starting in the fall semester of your third year, you will be required to take a subject called ``Special Seminar'' offered by each area.Although it is assumed that you will continue to select the same area as your area research, it is not necessary to select the same area.

  • However, for Special Area Seminars I to III, it is not possible to select subjects from different areas.In other words, by taking the area research course, at the end of the spring semester (during the summer vacation) of your third year, you must decide in which area you will pursue your graduation research.

  • In Special Area Seminar I, taking an English test (TOEFL, etc.) administered by the university is a requirement for results. Students are required to take the English exam held in the spring semester of their third year.

Completion of graduation research (4th year)

  • Although it will be a while yet, I would like to explain about completing my graduation research.There are some conditions for taking the course.
    • You must have taken Special Seminar I in the same field as your graduation research.
    • The number of credits required for graduation must be 30 or less.
  • If you do not meet these two requirements, you will not be able to take your graduation thesis, so please plan to take it by your fourth year.

If you are considering studying abroad

  • The University of Tsukuba has a scholarship system for students studying abroad.To apply for this scholarship, you will need to take some classes and earn credits.
  • If you wish to take a course in each area that incorporates study abroad or overseas presentations as part of the curriculum, please consult with the instructor in charge of the course and consider applying within that course.
  • Credits earned at the host university can be converted into courses offered at the University of Tsukuba.Before studying abroad, please check the information about the classes you will take at your destination and consult with the instructor in charge of the classes at the University of Tsukuba. (It is not necessarily possible to change the reading)
  • In addition, by taking the ``International Art & Design Seminar'' offered by the School of Art, students can apply towards scholarships.Students from any field of art can take this course.
