Work description:
In 1930, Eikyu began making his own prototype photograms, which he called ``photo-drawings.''In a space shielded from light, the artist first places a pattern on photographic paper and shines a flashlight over it to create a ``drawing''.When photographic paper is developed, areas exposed to light appear black and areas in shadow appear white, and by adjusting the way light is applied and the way objects are placed, there are infinite possibilities for expression.Eiku himself explained this as ``a painterly formative spirit in which one concentrates one's mind to form the desired image.''
In “On the Street Corner” (2010-JP-IS003), you can see the use of paper patterns, netting, and twigs in the lower right of the screen. The black and white shading created by adjusting the exposure time adds a nostalgic feeling similar to a hazy scene you may have seen before.
