Tsushima Survey August 2025

It's been a long time.

It's been a while since my last update...this time it's Tsushima again.

This time, we will be investigating the stone roofs of Tsushima together with Professor Kobayashi from Yasuda Women's University.

Using the equipment provided by Professor Kobayashi, we were able to confirm things that were previously unknown.

"I see, so that's how it is," I thought, feeling somewhat satisfied with the results of the investigation so far.

When we decided on the survey date, we were worried, "Is it still the rainy season? Will we be okay with the rain?", but when we arrived in Tsushima, it seemed that the rainy season had ended in western Japan. It was hot.

Professor Kobayashi conducting research.
The blue tarp on the stone roof had been removed. It looks like the roof has been repaired. Good.
We were also able to conduct a survey of the thermal environment.
A beautiful butterfly. I suddenly had a camera in hand, but I could only take one photo.
The next day I saw a beautiful black butterfly and took a photo of it, but it seemed to be a different species.
I can't fully convey the beauty of this place. My camera skills are limited. Sorry.
The seven-colored feathers were beautiful.

My next post won't be about Tsushima...I hope.

Tsushima Survey August 2025

Following last month, I went to Tsushima again.

This time we were supposed to be conducting a joint survey with Professor Kobayashi from Shimane University, but due to the snow caused by the strongest cold wave, Professor Kobayashi was unable to attend.

Our flight was delayed too, so we took a ferry to Tsushima for the first time.

Well, this was also a good experience.

Recent research has made me realize that humans cannot defeat nature.

The weather there was better than last month.
We arrive at 4am and can wait on board until 7am.
It seems like there is more snow than last month.

Tsushima Survey August 2025

The first on-site survey will be conducted in Tsushima in 2025.

The outbound flight was cancelled.

It snowed on the day we returned.

Humans cannot beat the weather.

When you can, do what you can, within your capabilities.

At the end of the survey, there was a bit of blue sky.
Mount Fuji from the sea of clouds. Isn't there a little snow on the ground?

HES48 Tsukuba

The 48th Human-Living Environment Symposium (Tsukuba) was held at the University of Tsukuba, and I had the honor of serving as the conference chairperson.

Thanks to the support of many people, including the members of the executive committee, our university's assistant professor, Dr. Kanno, the student part-timers, and the reception staff, we were able to accomplish this important task without any problems. Thank you very much.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated.

We asked Miki Yamamoto, an associate professor at our university and a manga artist, to give a special lecture.
The oral presentation venue.
The poster session venue.
The social gathering venue.

Japanese Society of Biometeorology

A little while ago, no, quite a while ago? This happened last month.

I attended the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Biometeorology (Tokyo).

The title of the presentation was "Indoor thermal environment of Tsushima Koya."

The results were quite interesting, so we would like to conduct further research in the winter.

We also received valuable opinions and advice regarding our research.

The venue was Hosei University's Ichigaya Campus, and it was such a beautiful and impressive facility that I was amazed and wondered, "Is this really the same Japanese university?"

Is it strange to compare the campuses of a private university and a national university in Tokyo?

The venue is Hosei University.
The main lecture hall.
From the room where the board meeting was held the previous day, we could see Yasukuni Shrine and Nippon Budokan.
I tried my best to photograph a big onion.

Uchiko Town Survey November 2024

I went to Uchiko Town in Ehime Prefecture to conduct a field survey.

The tour focused on investigating the existing shutters and floor cushions in the traditional townscape, and also inspected covered bridges.

This survey was a joint investigation by Associate Professor Kobayashi of Shimane University and Lecturer Kurihara of Tohoku Institute of Technology.

Tokushima Survey September 2024

A week of September has passed in the blink of an eye.

Finally, there are signs of autumn.

The report from last month's investigation has yet to be released.

In the latter half of August, I went on a survey to Tokushima Prefecture.

This time, the survey was conducted jointly with Professor Ishii from Meijo University, Professor Kobayashi from Shimane University, and Professor Kurihara from Tohoku Institute of Technology.

The environmental group conducted a small climate observation survey.

A graduate student who joined the lab in April also participated in the field survey for the first time.

They did a great job despite the heat.

Since I didn't use any sunscreen, my skin color changed completely.

Tsushima Survey August 2024

I went to Tsushima in Nagasaki Prefecture to investigate.

This survey was a joint study conducted by Professor Watanabe of Daido University and Professor Kurihara of Tohoku Institute of Technology.

I had the impression that Tsushima was fairly cool in the summer, but this time I found it to be hotter than I had ever experienced before.

We went to Gunkura in Shiine village, Tsushima city.
Professor Watanabe and Professor Kurihara setting up the measuring equipment.
After successfully completing the survey, we took a commemorative photo.

What is your image of traditional folk houses? 2024

This year as well, we had students draw what they envisioned as a traditional folk house in class.

First, with a mental image.

Next, I had them draw it using image search for support.

Unfortunately, there were more students than usual who were absent, probably because the class was held during the holidays.

Tsushima Survey August 2024

I went to Tsushima to investigate.

This is the last survey for this year.

This time, it was a joint investigation between Professor Ishii of Meijo University and Professor Kurihara of Tohoku Institute of Technology.

We conducted a thermal environment measurement survey including micro-climate observations at Gunkura in the Shiine village.
