Arts Degree Program Doctoral Program Overview

The Arts Degree Program (Doctoral Program) develops human resources who are equipped with advanced academic knowledge and specialized abilities related to art and design, and who can carry out independent research and creative activities, covering a wide range of fields from theory to production. Our aim is to send out internationally recognized researchers and highly skilled professionals into society.

This course, which has a capacity of seven students (including a few specially selected working adults), conducts basic research on various aspects of artistic creation, evaluation, systems, history, etc. With regard to plastic arts (fine arts), we use a multifaceted approach, from pure theory to experimental production, to elucidate and create the ``beauty'' of art that has been produced as a result of human cultural activities.

In addition, in the field of visual design and environmental design, we provide advanced education from the perspectives of information, vision, space, environment, design, and preservation, and in addition to basic theory, we provide new industry creation, environmental conservation, and media technology. We will also develop research that strengthens collaboration and interdisciplinarity with adjacent related fields, such as networking, welfare design, and constructed space theory.

The entrance examination system uses a format in which all faculty members evaluate examinees' presentations.

In the first and second years of the three-year curriculum, students develop the ability to present research at academic conferences and submit papers by taking courses such as "Special Seminar in Art I and II."All graduate students and faculty members participate to present and evaluate the progress of their research.

In the third year, students can submit a doctoral thesis and receive a doctoral degree (in art) after it is reviewed by the thesis review committee. It is characterized by an open collaborative teaching system, such as holding interim presentation screening sessions for dissertations for degrees open to the public.Students who have achieved outstanding research achievements will be presented with the "Excellent Research Award."

In addition, in order to ensure the level and accumulation of research results in this degree program, we support students' submissions to academic journals. The ``Art Studies Research Group'' and the ``Art Studies Review'' magazine (published twice a year), both of which are established outside the university and in which many art faculty members of our university participate, provide powerful support for writing doctoral theses.
