Wood Carving

In the "Wood Carving Exercise" class, students create and present small pieces using wood (kusu wood). Students learn the basics of how to use wood carving tools and the fundamentals of wood carving expression. Although this is a specialized subject in the field of sculpture, it is aimed at people experiencing wood carving for the first time, so it is also attended by students who wish to study fields other than sculpture, such as design, Western painting, and Japanese painting, as well as students from other schools of art. As this is an introductory class, it is also attended by people who want to experience wood carving apart from their future specialty.

In the "Sculpture Exercises" class, students will create medium to large sculptures using mainly camphor wood logs. While primarily carving by hand, students will also use power tools such as chainsaws for larger pieces to explore their own personal expression.
