Dry lacquer|Kanshitsu

At the University of Tsukuba's Sculpture Department, students learn to create sculptures using the dry lacquer technique, which involves layering pieces of linen with lacquer to create a support, in the "Dry Lacquer Exercise" (undergraduate) and "Sculpture Technique Exercise" (graduate school) classes.

The method involves creating a prototype out of clay, then casting a plaster mold onto the inside of the mold, and pasting linen cloth and lacquering it with sabi lacquer (a mixture of lacquer and whetstone powder).

Based on the expression that makes use of the unique texture of rust lacquer, you will acquire knowledge and skills related to dry lacquer techniques while incorporating topcoat and decorative techniques of lacquer art.
