The University of Tsukuba Art Collection (UTAC) has a collection of over 600 art materials, including works donated by current and retired faculty members and purchased works from graduation and completion projects, as well as approximately 200 works donated by Akira Ishii. It consists of early modern and modern Oriental ceramics and modern and contemporary paintings.
At the University of Tsukuba School of Art, which manages UTAC, faculty members in the field of art history with experience as art museum curators play a central role in its management, and in addition to displaying it on campus, it actively lends out to museums and private companies in Japan and abroad. We are promoting its use as an artistic and academic resource at the University of Tsukuba.
The Ishii Collection, which forms the core of UTAC, is on permanent display in a special room in the University of Tsukuba Gallery in the University Hall, as well as irregularly featured exhibitions in the art space in the same building. It has provided topics for workshops and research meetings that spotlight authors and works, and has also led to the publication of a report on the results, ``Ishii Collection Research.''
Previous research projects surrounding the Ishii Collection have focused exclusively on painters and printmakers.Orishimo 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Hayama Itaya, a potter with ties to Ibaraki, and since the Ishii Collection also includes a celadon incense burner, we will focus on Hayama as a watershed for a research group in the field of crafts. I decided to give it a try.
The study group includes Masaaki Arakawa, a leading researcher on Itaya Hayama, Hisaho Hanai, who has produced research results using historical materials on the early activities of Hayama, as well as Shuji Tanaka, who specializes in the history of modern Japanese sculpture. Mr. Hayama, who majored in sculpture at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and then switched to ceramics, will be joined by the audience to examine the art of Hayama from a variety of angles.Following Mr. San's presentation, there will be an opportunity for audience members to discuss Hayama's art.
The contents of the research presentation will be summarized in "Ishii Collection Research. 8", which is scheduled to be published in March 2023.
・The event is scheduled to be held on the campus of the University of Tsukuba, but due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, it may be held completely online using Zoom.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
・Any changes to the event format will be announced on the Tsukuba ART website.https://www.art.tsukuba.ac.jp
