Publication information: Noriko Kuwahara, "Japan-U.S. Exchanges in Postwar Prints 1945-1965"

We would like to introduce a new book by Noriko Kuwahara, who received her doctorate in art from our university in 2002, "Japan-US Exchange in Postwar Prints 1945-1965." This book is her second solo work, following "A Study of Onchi Koshiro: Modernism in Prints" (Serika Shobo, 2012; winner of the Ringa Art Encouragement Award). In this book, she examines the 20 years of Japan-US exchange in printmaking from the end of the war to the time of the Tokyo Olympics, that is, from the occupation period to the beginning of the Cold War, by exploring materials left in research institutions and museum archives in both Japan and the US, as well as in the homes of surviving family members. Through meticulous research, she sheds light on the question of why creative prints, which did not receive much attention before the war, were able to gain high acclaim after the war, and what factors led to this situation.
