History of Art

Introduction

Based on the professional training in art history given at schools in the University of Tsukuba or other academic institutions, History of Art in the Master’s Program would pursue further research in theoretical studies. Japanese art history and Western art history are the two main areas of study. Our aim is to train researchers with extensive knowledge in the field who would further explore their field of study, as well as highly specialized professionals who could apply academic knowledge and research methods to their area of expertise.

Since 1983, ‘Geiso’ has been an annual journal for graduate students to present the results of their work. It has been a vehicle for profound study and has published numerous studies on art of East and West, from ancient times to contemporary art. The journal has evolved into a highly academic publication in 2006, as it publishes papers after screening by referees.

Career paths for graduates

After completing this program, students have pursued careers as curators at galleries or museums, or further study in the Doctoral Program at the University of Tsukuba. Please refer to the description.
